Dear Eugene-

I am starting to Thermopolis Wy—probably tomorrow—Helen is paying for a ticket
—and will see me off on a train—

I am overjoyed to go—will write particulars when I get home—Dont address any letters to me here—but to Thermopolis Wyoming—

Born in 1851, Isaac S. Schultz was a scholar, pioneer, and sheep rancher in the Wild West of the 1880s. He survived the terrible blizzards of 1886-87, known as the "big die-up," which killed most of his sheep. Discouraged, ashamed, and owing money to his brothers in Pennsylvania, he chose to disappear for the rest of his life. After 44 years passed, Isaac was reunited with his astonished relatives at age 79, thanks to the intervention of his wife, Amanda. The book contains a total of 67 letters written in the 1880s and 1931, along with many period photos, maps and illustrations.

This blog will contain 42 additional, surviving letters written in 1931-32 that were not included in the book, due to their redundancy or departure from the main story.

I will be transcribing and uploading these letters in batches during 2014, from the most recent to the oldest. Please check back again soon.
